Internship Overview

  • Role: Communications and Partnerships Intern
  • Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Contract Duration: 12 months
  • Remuneration: R9 411 per month
  • Closing Date: 27 February 2025 (23:59 Central Africa Time/21:59 UK Time)
  • Eligibility: Must have the right to live and work in South Africa

Role Purpose

The internship aims to equip a highly motivated recent graduate with the necessary skills and experience to support the British Council’s strategic objectives in South Africa. The intern will gain hands-on experience in communications, partnership development, and programme support.

Key Responsibilities

1. Communications

  • Assist in developing social media strategies to enhance the British Council’s online presence.
  • Support the creation of engaging digital content, including videos and visual assets.
  • Learn how to track and report on content performance across various platforms.
  • Contribute to a country-level communications plan to elevate the profiles of the Country Director and Leadership Team.
  • Assist in writing impact stories, awareness-raising content, and reports.

📌 Learning Outcome: Gain insights into effective communication strategies to build an inclusive and coherent organisational culture while boosting external visibility.

2. Partnership Development

  • Support the Business Development Manager and programme teams with research for stakeholder mapping.
  • Develop and maintain stakeholder databases.
  • Assist in identifying and building productive partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including the British High Commission and Department for Business and Trade.

3. Programme Support

  • Provide monitoring and evaluation administrative assistance.
  • Assist in planning and promoting internal and external events.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, partners, and stakeholders to ensure successful programme execution.

📌 Learning Outcome: Develop strong leadership, planning, and communication skills necessary for project management in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate in Marketing, Communications, Social Sciences, or a recent entrant to the workforce.
  • Holds an equivalent qualification (Certificate/Diploma/Degree).

Role-Specific Knowledge & Experience

Essential:

  • Strong research, analytical, and report-writing skills.
  • Understanding of marketing and communication principles.
  • Passion for education, youth empowerment, and the creative industries.
  • Commitment to learning and professional growth.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic digital literacy, including proficiency in social media platforms and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Understanding of desk-based research.
  • High level of professionalism and integrity.

Desirable:

  • Active participation on social media platforms or experience in digital engagement.
